On this day in 1975, soap opera Ryan's Hope made its premiere on ABC. On the air for nearly 14 years, some of the show's noteworthy performers include Kate Mulgrew (Mary Ryan), Nancy Addison (Jillian Coleridge) and Malcolm Groome (Patrick Ryan). Despite having a devoted following, the show never performed up to the network's expectations and was cancelled in late 1988, with its final episode airing in January of 1989.
In 2000 - Kelly Monaco made her soap opera debut in the role of Livvie Locke on Port Charles. A spin-off of the ABC soap opera, General Hospital, Monaco would eventually join the cast of GH after Port Charles was cancelled in 2003. On General Hospital, Monaco played the role of Sam McCall for over 20 years until her character was killed off in 2024. The actress publicly indicated that she felt her dismissal from GH was some kind of retaliation for being vocal about backstage issues on the show.
In 2003 - Roger Howarth made his debut in the role of Paul Ryan on As the World Turns. Playing the son of James Stenbeck (Anthony Herrera) and Barbara Ryan (Colleen Zenk), Howarth would play the role until the series aired its final episode in 2010. He currently plays the role of Matt Clark on The Young and the Restless.
